Troy Ruins
Troy, within the borders of Tevfikiye village, 25 km away from Çanakkale, is one of the most famous ancient cities in the world. The importance of Troy lies in the fact that it is the place mentioned in Homer’s Iliad and Odyseia epics. These epics are the first written literary products of the West. During the excavations carried out in Troy, the existence of 9 cultural layers was detected. Its early periods date back to 3000 BC. Nothing remains from those periods other than some foundations and ceramic ruins.
The most striking finds from Troy II, dated to 2500-2300 BC, are the foundations of the house examples called Megaron and the group of finds that Schliemann called Priam’s treasure, which is now in the Pushkin Museum in Russia. The Troy VI-VII periods, dating back to 1700-1000 BC, are generally identified with Homer’s Troy. Its stone walls, which have survived to the present day and whose construction style is called sawtooth, attract attention.

Troy VIII, covering the Hellenistic and Roman Periods. and IX. What has survived from the layers are places such as baths, odeion, theater and bouleterion. Troy archaeological finds are among the important values of the world cultural heritage with its legends that are the subject of the most well-known epic of ancient times. Its strategic location, which allowed a rich civilization to flourish but also caused it to be exposed to many attacks, can be considered both as luck and misfortune for Troy.
Located on the strait separating the European and Asian continents, the historical ruins of Troy and its groundbreaking finds in the world of archeology are shown as the legacy of its brilliant history that started in 3000 BC. It is believed that the Trojan War, which made the name of the ancient city known to the whole world and caused many movies and TV series to be shot about it, took place here, and the fact that Homer’s famous epic Iliad describes this war further increases the attractiveness of Troy.
Therefore, it is one of the settlements that both history and literature lovers will enjoy visiting. Troy is one of the ancient cities with the richest archaeological findings in Anatolia. These riches have brought it to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998.
